1. You must be a good skater.

2. You must learn how to clean the puck with your stick.

3. You must keep your stick on the ice at all times while waiting for a shot.

4. You must use a stick that is correct for your height. If you are 6 ft. tall or so,, use a stick with a long wide part. You can use tip to 24 in. If you are small, use one with a shorter wide part. Never cut the handle of your stick. This often prevents you from reaching from a loose puck away from you.

5. Try to play standing as much as possible. This helps on the high shots and the rebounds.

6. Block your angle well. Do not play with your back against the goal. Try to stand at the edge of your goal crease.

7. Do not move backward when the puck carrier comes towards you. In doing so, you give him more room to score and you are off balance.

8. Always keep your eyes on the puck.

9. Do not anticipate plays.

10. On a breakaway, do not rush toward your opponent. Wait for him at the edge of your goal crease.

11. You must learn how to use your two gloves and your skate on the stick side.

12. You must talk to your players and tell them what to do with the puck.

13. Never criticize a teammate if he makes a mistake Your job is to correct mistakes.

14. Do not be afraid to ask your Coach for help. If you do not understand his explanation, make him repeat it. He prefers that, to see you repeat the same mistakes.

15. Watch other goalies. You will learn a lot from them - I still do after thirty years.
